((A journal for Econtra RPG))
Character: Albel Nox
Series/Fandom: Star Ocean
Original or Alternate: Alternate
Age: Twenty-four
Gender: Male
Species: Human, Elicoorian
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Appearance: Albel is tall - around six feet, but he's also very slim, and thus doesn't weigh much for his height. He has shaggy, black hair which fades to blond at the tips for no apparent reason, and is pulled into two long, thin braids at the back. His eyes are an unsettling red color which, though rare among Elicoorians and pretty much nonexistent in Earthlings, is in fact natural. He has a rather unfortunate tendency to wear high boots, a sarong, a metal collar, and what essentially amounts to a belly shirt. Apart from his fashion sense, many people consider him extremely attractive. Since his Ascension of the Flame ceremony succeeded, he has two normal arms.
Personality: This version of Albel is not as cold as the original; he's much more open with his feelings and understanding of others. He is still very disciplined, and will never walk away from a fight, but he doesn't love bloodshed as much as his counterpart. He keeps his very subtle sense of humor (yes, OU!Albel really does have a sense of humor). He's quick to anger, but also quick to forgive.
Abilities/Weapons: Like all Elicoorians, Albel can visually recognize fluctuations in the flow of symbological force (which most likely extends to magic). His main asset, however, is his incredible skill with a sword - he's knows as the best in Airyglyph in one-on-one combat, wielding the powerfully enchanted Crimson Scourge, a sacred relic of Airyglyph which he inherited from his father. He is adept at fighting in concert with his dragon, Ather, although since Ather's not here, that point's rather moot. He also maintains a rudimentary knowledge of the six basic symbols - Healing, Antidote, Silence, Firebolt, and Earth Glaive. Another strength is his discipline, knowledge of tactics, and military experience.
He's also the leader of Airyglyph's Dragon Brigade and a duke, but those don't really apply here.
Weaknesses: Albel disdains heavy armor, relying on his speed to keep himself from being injured, and has gotten used to fighting alongside a dragon. He's quick to anger, and tends to have difficulty dealing with more than one foe. He also has terrible aim with his symbology, so it's hard to say how effective he would actually be if separated from his sword.
History: Albel was born in the kingdom of Airyglyph in the mountainous southern part of the continent of Gaitt, in the southern hemisphere of Elicoor II. He was raised by his father, Glou Nox, the leader of Airyglyph's Dragon Brigade, and thus became used to life at court, not that he ever really liked it. He was raised as a soldier first and a nobleman second; at the young age of fifteen, he wished to enter the Dragon Brigade himself.
Here is where his history truly diverges. To enter the Dragon Brigade, a soldier must seek out an air dragon and enter into a contract with it in a ceremony known as the Ascension of the Flame, in which the knight releases his own feelings and touches the spirit of the dragon in a ritual combat. In the original universe, Albel failed, and would have died had his father not shielded him. But this Albel narrowly succeeded in the ceremony, finally achieving the necessary oneness with the dragon even as it drew in the breath that would have ended his life, meaning that he retained his left arm and his father, as well as a covenant with the knight-class air dragon Ather.
The ceremony successful, Albel's skill with the blade along with his newfound empathy quickly propelled him and Ather through the ranks of the Dragon Brigade, to the point that when Glou died in the war against Aquaria, Albel took his place, bolstered by his ability and reputation. Peace had just been achieved between the two kingdoms when a strange metal object crashed in the middle of the royal city of Airyglyph - the spaceship known as the Eagle, which carried two Klausians called Mirage Koas and Cliff Fittir, and an Earthling boy by the name of Fayt Leingod.
They claimed to be from a technologically advanced country on the continent of Greeton, searching for Fayt's father, but some of the things they let slip didn't quite add up, and they were forced to reveal their true origin - as visitors from another planet, when the Vendeeni arrived. With the help of the Aquarian agent Nel Zelpher, an Earthling girl called Maria, the largest air dragon on Elicoor, Crosell, and an experimental Aquarian weapon known as the Thunder Arrow, they were able to stall the Vendeeni until Maria's ship, the Diplo, and a Galactic Federation starfighter drove the invaders off. The visitors from another planet attempted to depart, but the Vendeeni known as Biwig stopped them, having taken Fayt's childhood friend Sophia Traydor and his father Robert hostage. Albel attempted to help them, but was seriously wounded and had to be treated onboard the Diplo after they took off.
Albel accompanied the offworlders to Moonbase, in orbit around Sol III itself, where they learned that the galaxy was under siege by the strange godlike Executioners of the Creator, the angelic Proclaimers and the demonic Enforcers. They travelled to the planet Styx and the Time Gate which led to the 4-D World, where they learned that the entire universe was an interactive game known as the Eternal Sphere, and that the Executioners were the attempt of the owner of the Sphere Company to "debug" the Sphere.
The Creator, a man called Luther, finally decided that the Eternal Sphere was beyond saving and had to be destroyed, and Albel and Fayt's company reached Luther's stronghold through the Eternal Sphere itself and the strange realm of the Firewall and the Spiral Tower, collecting Nel Zelpher again along the way. Albel lent his own strength to the group's belief, hoping that their conviction would will the Eternal Sphere to remain in existance after the Creator deleted it. Their success meant that Albel could return to his duties on Elicoor II, which, like the rest of the Eternal Sphere, would never be the same. His acquaintances from other worlds would still drop by occasionally, of course, and he made it a point to meet them whenever he could.
